Event highlights

To broaden students' international horizons, enhance their professional knowledge and English communication skills, and promote the internationalization of civil engineering disciplines at our university, Teacher Chen Zhongwei led 22 students from the 2022 and 2023 cohorts of the Sino-foreign cooperative education program to Australia for an overseas internship during the summer vacation. Under the meticulous organization and arrangements of RMIT University, the overseas internship team visited two cities, Melbourne and Sydney, conducting a 12-day overseas practice program that included classroom learning, 3D experience, engineering site visits, and cultural exchanges. The team successfully accomplished their learning, practice, and exchange objectives.

On RMIT's campus, teachers including Peter, Jake Heinrich, Nick Philippou, Karen Porter, and Adam Da Cruz delivered lectures on topics such as the characteristics of Melbourne's built environment, English learning, oral training, academic integrity, and future career development. These sessions expanded students' professional knowledge, enhanced their professional identity, and laid a foundation for their future academic pursuits and research endeavors.

In RMIT's Virtual Bionics Laboratory, Teacher Ben Koder explained the working principles of equipment including simulated helicopters, mixed reality (MR) technology, and the humanoid robot Rosie, organizing students to experience them in an orderly manner. Teachers Ali and Behzad introduced VR devices, allowing students to experience RMIT's campus through 3D engineering simulations. This immersive and interactive approach stimulated students' interest in professional learning.

Teacher Kessy guided the group to visit and learn about the history and functions of RMIT's distinctive buildings. In downtown Melbourne, Teacher Rebecca led a tour of the under-construction Metro Tunnel, Tower Cranes project, and the State Library Victoria, offering students insights into the modernity and historical heritage of local architecture. In Sydney, Teacher Paul provided an English-language explanation of the history and features of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, focusing on the Opera House's architectural form and structural design. The blend of artistic and technological elements left students deeply impressed.

RMIT's student activities coordinator organized visits to teaching buildings, student activity rooms, gyms, libraries, and dormitories, introducing campus clubs and signature events. Local students also shared the history and characteristics of Australian Aboriginal culture. In sports, students participated in friendly table tennis and basketball matches with RMIT faculty and students, fostering communication and friendship.

The 12-day internship was brief but fulfilling. Teachers Karen Porter and Rebecca Yang organized group presentations where students showcased their learning outcomes, followed by detailed comments from the instructors. Students expressed that the internship broadened their horizons, increased their knowledge, clarified their academic goals, and boosted their motivation.

RMIT University, a century-old comprehensive public institution in Australia, is ranked among the top 10 Australian universities and is a member of ATN (Australian Technology Network). Ranked 140th in the 2024 QS World University Rankings, RMIT is the partner institution for our university's Sino-foreign cooperative education program in Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering. This internship facilitated direct and in-depth communication on student development between the two institutions, providing students with an intuitive understanding of RMIT's teaching environment and campus culture, and building a bridge for closer future collaboration.

The college has always attached great importance to international education for undergraduates.
