From August 17 to 19, the 4th International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications (RocDyn-4) was held in Xuzhou. This conference was co-hosted by China University of Mining and Technology and Southeast University, co-organized by Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, and jointly undertaken by the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering and the Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Underground Science and Engineering. More than 300 experts, scholars, graduate students, and representatives from enterprises and institutions from over 20 countries attended the conference via both online and offline formats, including Academician He Manchao of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, ISRM Vice President for the Asia Region Ömer Aydan, former ISRM Vice President for Europe Charlie C. Li, ISRM Fellow Jian Zhao, Chief Scientist Jonny Rutqvist from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States, and Engineering Academy of Singapore Fellow Yingxin Zhou.

On the morning of August 18, the opening ceremony was held. Song Xuefeng, President of China University of Mining and Technology, delivered a speech on behalf of the university. He welcomed the participants, expressed gratitude to the experts and scholars for their long-term concern and support for the university's development, and briefly introduced the university's basic situation, disciplinary development, and contributions in serving the national deep underground strategy. He expressed hope that by establishing this platform for international academic exchange, scientific research in the field of rock dynamics would be further promoted, striving to make greater contributions to theoretical breakthroughs, technological revolutions, and practical innovations in rock mechanics and engineering applications.

Professor Suseno Kramadibrata, Vice President of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), delivered a speech. He expressed gratitude to the conference chair and organizing committee, highly praised the innovative achievements in rock mechanics research in China in recent years, affirmed China's outstanding accomplishments in the field of rock mechanics and rock engineering and its significant contributions to the development of ISRM, and, on behalf of the ISRM Board, wished the conference complete success.

Academician He Manchao, President of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, delivered a speech. He briefly introduced the society's basic situation, fully affirmed the important support provided by theoretical and applied research in rock dynamics for large-scale national geotechnical engineering construction, and expressed hope that the conference would conduct in-depth discussions and forward-looking exploration on the future development direction of rock dynamics, continuously enhancing its engineering application value.

The conference chair, Professor Li Xiaozhao, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering and Director of the Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Underground Science and Engineering, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a speech on behalf of the organizers. He welcomed the past chairs of the International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications, briefly introduced the conference details, and hoped that all participants would take this conference as an opportunity to strengthen communication, mutual learning, and promotion, continuously advancing the theory and technology of rock dynamics to contribute to major rock engineering needs worldwide.

This conference, themed "Rock Dynamics: Progress and Prospect," featured sub-topics including Experimental tests and techniques, Analysis and theoretical development, Numerical modelling and methods, and Rock engineering applications. A total of 83 experts and scholars from countries including China, Russia, the United States, Singapore, Japan, Serbia, Australia, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Canada, South Korea, and India presented 9 invited reports, 7 keynote reports by young scholars, and 67 parallel session reports. The presenters introduced the latest work progress and research findings regarding technical methods for testing dynamic mechanical properties of rocks, dynamic response and disaster prevention in rock mass engineering, mechanisms and technologies of rock breaking (e.g., blasting, mechanical, microwave), mechanisms and numerical analysis of rock damage and fracture, and engaged in in-depth discussions with on-site participants.

On the afternoon of August 19, the closing ceremony was held. The conference academic committee chair, Engineering Academy of Singapore Fellow Yingxin Zhou, presented awards to seven selected outstanding young scholars who delivered keynote reports and gave a speech. He expressed gratitude to the participating scholars in the field of rock dynamics from around the world and shared his expectations regarding research in rock dynamics and the mission of young scholars. Professor Qianbing Zhang from Monash University, Australia, the chair of the next conference, delivered an online speech. He invited global experts and scholars in the field of dynamics to gather in Melbourne, Australia, in 2024 to jointly write a new chapter for the RocDyn conference series. Professor Li Jianchun from Southeast University, co-chair of the conference organizing committee, presided over the closing ceremony.

It is reported that the International Conference on Rock Dynamics and Applications (RocDyn) is the most authoritative international conference in the field of rock dynamics research. It is a specialized conference of the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM), focusing on the dynamic behavior and engineering applications of rock materials and rock mass structures under various physical conditions, providing a platform for scholars worldwide engaged in related research and work in rock dynamics. To date, the RocDyn series has been successfully held three times previously in Lausanne, Switzerland (2013), Suzhou, China (2016), and Trondheim, Norway (2018).
