Exchange report

On November 20-21, the Jiangsu Province "Underground Engineering" Graduate Academic Innovation Forum and International Symposium was held at our university. The forum was hosted by the Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Education Steering Committee, organized by the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering, and co-organized by the Graduate School of China University of Mining and Technology, the Jiangsu Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the China University of Mining and Technology Library, and the Disciplinary Innovation Base for Deep Underground Engineering. The forum adopted a online and offline format and was simultaneously live-streamed via the Weizan platform. Five internationally renowned experts from Monash University, Catholic University of Leuven, Nanyang Technological University, and Quaid-e-Awam University of Pakistan, as well as over 200 graduate students from more than 30 universities within and outside Jiangsu Province, registered to participate. During the forum, a cumulative total of over 2,000 attendees joined via Tencent Meeting or the Weizan platform.

On the afternoon of November 20, the opening ceremony of the forum was held. Representatives from the Graduate School, the Student Affairs Office of the Party Committee, the University Youth League Committee, and the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering attended the ceremony. Professor Pu Hai, Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering, presided over the opening ceremony.

Professor Hua Zulin, Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Education Steering Committee and Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School of Hohai University, delivered a speech. He welcomed the participants and briefly introduced the background, purpose, and significance of the Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Academic Innovation Forum. He stated that academic exchange is an important means to promote the comprehensive development of graduate students and improve the quality of graduate education. This forum, centered on graduate students and featuring invited reports by domestic and international experts, aims to foster communication and collaboration among graduate students across disciplines. He encouraged all graduate students to engage earnestly in learning, deep thinking, and mutual exchange to continuously advance their academic progress and capabilities.

Professor Zhang Dongsheng, Dean of the Graduate School of our university, delivered a speech on behalf of the university. He briefly introduced the university’s disciplinary development, program construction, and graduate student training, and welcomed domestic and international graduate students to study, exchange, and pursue degrees at the university. He highlighted the university’s prominent advantages in deep underground resource extraction and underground space development, noting that it has consistently led international academic frontiers in key research areas such as deep rock and soil mechanics, achieving multiple world-leading scientific and technological outcomes. These achievements, he said, provided a solid foundation for the success of this forum. He urged all participating graduate students to actively engage in discussions, strengthen communication, broaden their academic horizons, and continuously promote their personal growth and progress.

The forum, themed "Scientific Development and Efficient Utilization of Deep Underground Space," included an international symposium (with invited keynote reports) and a graduate student forum. For the international symposium, six renowned experts from Monash University, Catholic University of Leuven, Nanyang Technological University, Quaid-e-Awam University of Pakistan, and the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering were invited to discuss topics such as "New Theories, Technologies, and Techniques in Underground Space Development" and "Scientific Development and Utilization of Urban Underground Space." Professor Li Xiaozhao, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Deep Geomechanics and Underground Engineering, chaired the keynote report session.

During the graduate student forum on the morning of November 21, three parallel sessions were held on the topics of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Soil Mechanics and Underground Engineering, and Underground Space and Resource Development and Utilization. Graduate students from over 30 universities, including Nanjing University, Southeast University, China University of Mining and Technology, Hohai University, Jiangsu University, Nanjing Tech University, and Jiangsu University of Science and Technology within Jiangsu Province, as well as Tongji University, Sun Yat-sen University, Chongqing University, Zhengzhou University, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing University of Technology, and Chang’an University outside the province, presented 45 session reports. The forum recognized ten outstanding presenters.

The Jiangsu Provincial Graduate Academic Innovation Forum is an important platform for graduate student innovation training and academic exchange, established along disciplinary lines, rooted in Jiangsu, serving the Yangtze River Delta region, and radiating nationwide. Centered on graduate students, the forum aims to broaden their academic horizons and stimulate innovative thinking by promoting interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, thereby continuously enhancing the quality of graduate education. Guided by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education and hosted by various graduate education steering committees, the forum is undertaken by universities with strengths in relevant themes. It has attracted increasing participation from graduate students and garnered growing attention from universities, effectively contributing to the improvement of graduate education quality across the province.
