Remarks by Professor Mikhail A. Guzev, Academician of

the Russian Academy of Sciences

On September 23, Professor Mikhail Alexandrovich Guzev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and from Perm National Research Polytechnic University, and his delegation visited CUMT and were invited to deliver a special academic report. Vice President Bian Zhengfu met with the delegation in Conference Room 411 of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Construction and Health Operation and Maintenance of Deep Underground Engineering.

Bian extended a warm welcome to Guzev and his delegation. He noted that the two universities share highly aligned research directions in fields such as deep geotechnical mechanics and engineering safety, with a solid foundation for cooperation and broad prospects ahead. He expressed the expectation that the two institutions will learn from each other, enhance mutual exchanges, and carry out more extensive and in-depth cooperation in joint scientific research, faculty and student exchanges, and resource sharing, so as to jointly contribute wisdom and strength to energy and resource development, deep underground engineering safety, and sustainable development.

Academician Guzev appreciated the hospitality of CUMT. He stated that Perm National Research Polytechnic University attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation and has already conducted fruitful collaboration with China University of Mining and Technology. He highly praised the remarkable achievements made by CUMT in the field of deep earth science, hoping that both sides will deepen cooperation around relevant frontier directions. Relying on their respective educational resources, he proposed exploring applications for international joint laboratories, promoting faculty exchanges, and establishing joint student training mechanisms, aiming to inject new impetus into China-Russia cooperation in the field of deep underground energy and resource development.

At the meeting, Bian Zhengfu and Guzev signed university-level cooperation memorandum on behalf of the two universities. Following the welcome ceremony, the Sino-Russian Symposium on "Advanced Applications of Rock Mechanics in Geotechnical Engineering" was held at the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Construction and Health Operation and Maintenance of Deep Underground Engineering. Experts and scholars from both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on cutting-edge technologies, latest research findings, and engineering practice cases in the field of rock mechanics. After the symposium, Guzev and his delegation held further in-depth academic discussions with the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering on cooperation in areas including deep underground energy and resource development, efficient utilization of deep underground space, and rock mechanics engineering.

Founded in 1953, Perm National Research Polytechnic University is one of the largest technical universities in Russia. Awarded the title of "National Research University," the university has achieved significant outcomes in the theory of deep rock mechanics and resource mining technology. It has trained over 120,000 professional and technical personnel for Russia in fields such as mineral resource exploration and mining, energy, machinery, and aerospace.
