Invited Professor Alex Opoku from the University of Sharjah delivers an academic report at our school

On the afternoon of August 10, Professor Alex Opoku from the College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah, UAE, visited the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering. He delivered an academic report titled "Academic Writing in an Era of AI: Ethical Use of AI for Effective Writing" in Conference Room A203 of the College Building. The event attracted active participation from faculty and graduate students of the School of Mining Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Technology, and the Engineering Management Department of the college. Additionally, teachers and students from institutions such as Chang'an University and Chongqing Jiaotong University joined online. The report was chaired by Qiao Yaning, Director of the Engineering Management Department.

During the session, Alex Opoku introduced various practical AI tools, such as Chat PDF and Research Rabbit in an accessible manner. He not only explained how to use these AI tools to help researchers improve their writing efficiency and quality but also comprehensively elaborated on the specific application scenarios and significant advantages of AI in academic writing, as well as the academic ethical norms and integrity principles that must be strictly adhered to during use. Professor Zou Xiaowei from Chang'an University provided commentary, noting that with the development of AI technology, educational models and assessment methods are undergoing unprecedented changes and challenges, but the core role of humans in academic research and the educational process remains irreplaceable.

After the report, Alex Opoku conducted one-on-one paper mentoring sessions, providing guidance and revisions for the research papers of several young faculty members and students, focusing on aspects such as thematic innovation and English writing conventions. Participating teachers and students expressed that they gained substantially from the event, achieving a tangible enhancement in their understanding of high-level paper writing and the application of AI.

After the report, Alex Opoku conducted a one-on-one tutoring session for research papers, providing guidance and revision on various aspects such as topic innovation and English writing conventions for some young teachers and students. The attending teachers and students expressed that they have gained a lot from this activity, and their understanding of high-level paper writing and AI applications has been substantially improved.
