From November 1st to 3rd, the CHINA ROCK 2024 Xuzhou Center Venue and the inaugural Jiangsu Provincial Conference on Deep Underground Energy Development, Storage, and Safety were held in Xuzhou.  Distinguished guests including Professor Wang Fuming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Director of the Yellow River Laboratory; Professor Zhao Yuemin, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and faculty member of our university; Researcher Zhou Chenghu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and member of the Yunlong Lake Laboratory Strategic Advisory Committee; Lu Ming, Academician of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences, Chief Scientist of Yunlong Lake Laboratory, and Distinguished Professor at our university; Professor Eivind Grøv, Academician of the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences and Yunlong Lake Laboratory Distinguished Scholar; Professor Hou Zhengmeng, Academician of the German Academy of Science and Engineering and editorial board member of the journal "Deep Underground Science and Engineering"; Sheng Fanglong, Member of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Emergency Management; Feng Shaodong, Member of the Party Committee and Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology; Shen Zhongyi, Chairman of the Jiangsu Association of Work Safety Science and Technology; Liu Bo, Secretary of the Party Committee of our university; Guo Xiaomin, Vice Mayor of Xuzhou Municipal People's Government; Lu Xiancai, Vice President of Nanjing University and Vice Chairman of the Deep Underground Space Exploration and Development Branch of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering; Pan Xuhai, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing Vocational University of Industry Technology; Zhang Tieming, Chairman of the China University Science and Technology Journals Association et al. attended the opening ceremony. The opening ceremony was presided over by Su Bin, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the Jiangsu Association of Work Safety Science and Technology.

At the opening ceremony, Sheng Fanglong, Feng Shaodong, Shen Zhongyi, and Guo Xiaomin delivered addresses. They emphasized that energy development and storage are crucial to the national economy, people's livelihood, and national security, and that deep underground energy storage provides a key direction for China's green, low-carbon, and sustainable energy development. They expressed hope that experts and scholars would further advance cutting-edge research in deep underground energy development and storage, continuously promote the development of new quality productive forces in the deep underground energy storage industry, and wished the conference a complete success. Liu Bo, on behalf of the university, welcomed the attending leaders and experts and expressed gratitude to friends from various sectors for their long-standing concern and support for the university's development. She briefly introduced the basic information and recent achievements, particularly its exploration and significant results in the field of deep underground engineering of the university. She stated that energy security is increasingly becoming a priority for major countries worldwide, and the university will take this academic conference as an opportunity to further implement the spirit of the Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee, continue to leverage its disciplinary advantages, promote the coordinated development of education, technology, and talent, advance theoretical development and technological progress in rock mechanics and engineering, demonstrate new achievements in assisting Jiangsu to fulfill the major tasks of "Four Fronts" and "Four News," and show new commitment in serving and supporting Chinese modernization with education, technology, and talent.

The opening ceremony also featured the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between Yunlong Lake Laboratory and the Yellow River Laboratory, the launch ceremony of the Deep Underground Innovation Strategy Alliance, the launch ceremony of the 2nd Anniversary of the founding of "Deep Underground Science and Engineering" and Selection into ESCI Database. Professor Xie Heping, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Director of the State Key Laboratory of Intelligent Construction and Healthy Operation and Maintenance of Deep Underground Engineering at our university, and Editor-in-Chief of "Deep Underground Science and Engineering", expressed gratitude to friends from all sectors for their concern and support for the journal's development. He stated that the journal will continue to closely focus on strategic frontiers in deep underground resource energy development and space utilization, follow a path of high-quality development, and invited researchers to jointly advance the journal towards higher goals, making it an important platform for leading deep underground science development in China.

After the opening ceremony, the conference's keynote reports and thematic reports were held. This conference, with the theme of "New Theories, New Technologies, and Future Development Trends in Deep Underground Engineering", included keynote reports, journal roundtable meetings, as well as thematic conferences such as Deep Underground Energy Development, Storage, and Safety; Precise Detection and Prevention of Deep Karst Collapse; Frontier Forum on Deep Underground Science and High-Quality Journals; Hydrogeological Processes and Big Data in Deep Underground Space; Deep Underground Modeling and Deep-Time Big Data; Underground Storage and Deep Underground Carbon Waste Disposal; Forum on the Development of Future Industries in Deep Underground and the Construction of Innovation Demonstration Zones for Sustainable Development Agenda; and the Young Talents and Postgraduate Forum.

Keynote reports were delivered by Academician Zhou Chenghu, Academician Lu Ming, Academician Eivind Grøv, Academician Hou Zhengmeng, Professor Pan Xuhai, Professor Xia Kaiwen, and Director Fu Xinghui, titled respectively: "Research on Global Geomorphological Big Data," "Preliminary Investigation on Underground Energy Storage of Liquefied Ammonia in Rock Caverns," "Gas and Air Storage in Underground Caverns – Lessons from Hydropower and Oil & Gas Industries," "Underground Large-Scale Energy Storage Coupled with Multi-Conversion of Renewable Electricity: Challenges, Trends, and China's Potential," "Evolution Characteristics and Prevention of High-Pressure Hydrogen Leakage and Combustion Explosions," "Experimental Revelations of Fault Seismogenic Instability Mechanisms," and "Technological Innovation and Application of Connected Well Salt Cavern Storage by Suyan Group." Experts and scholars from institutions including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Sichuan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Nanjing University, South China University of Technology, University of Science and Technology of China, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China University of Mining and Technology, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Chang'an University, Nanjing Normal University, University of Technology Sydney, KU Leuven (Belgium), Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Safety Science and Technology, Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Institute of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology of Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Nanjing Center of China Geological Survey, China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research, Xi'an Transparent Geology Company of China Coal Technology and Engineering Group, Beijing Urban Construction Design & Development Group Co., Ltd., and other universities, research institutions, and enterprises presented 68 thematic reports in parallel sessions, introducing the latest work progress and research findings, and engaging in in-depth exchanges with on-site participants.

It is reported that CHINA ROCK 2024, the 21st Academic Annual Conference on Rock Mechanics and Engineering in China, continued its three-tier format of "Main Venue + Center Venues + Satellite Venues." The main venue was in Chengdu, with 15 center venues across the country and 277 satellite venues in universities nationwide. The conference brought together 36 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 20 foreign academicians, and over 120,000 domestic and international scientists and engineers for exchanges. A total of 789 society reports were arranged, including 25 from foreign experts from 13 countries. Additionally, the conference featured 20 technical training sessions and presentations of the latest scientific and technological innovations from 109 units.

The Xuzhou Center Venue was hosted by the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the International Association for Geo-environmental Disaster and Reduction, and the Jiangsu Association of Work Safety Science and Technology. It was organized by our university, the Deep Underground Space Exploration and Development Branch of the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the Yunlong Lake Laboratory of Deep Underground Science and Engineering, the Yellow River Laboratory, the Henan Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, the Jiangsu Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, and the journal "Deep Underground Science and Engineering".Co-organizers included the Jiangsu Geological Society, Jiangsu Seismological Society, Jiangsu Underground Space Society, and Jiangsu Renewable Energy Society, among others. The event attracted over 300 experts, scholars, and industry professionals from domestic and international universities, research institutions, leading enterprises, and national and provincial societies/associations. More than 5,000 participants joined via 12 satellite venues (including China University of Mining and Technology and Zhengzhou University) and online platforms.
