From August 30th to 31st, the School of Mechanics and Civil Engineering held the Overseas Experts and Scholars Lecture Series (2024, Issue 2) in Conference Room B201. Focusing on cutting-edge academic fields such as energy, resources, and carbon neutrality, this lecture series aimed to promote the college's research and development in related areas through international exchanges and cooperation. The event specially invited Dr. Jonathan M Cullen from the Department of Energy, Transport and Urban Infrastructure at the University of Cambridge, UK, and Dr. Meng Fanran, tenure-track assistant professor and doctoral supervisor from the University of Sheffield, UK. Their participation added a strong academic atmosphere and international perspective to the lecture series.
The lecture was co-chaired by Professor Wang Yingchao, Vice Dean of the School, and Associate Professor Qiao Yaning, Director of the Department of Engineering Management. Professor Wang Yingchao first extended a warm welcome and sincere gratitude to the two scholars for traveling from afar. He emphasized that this lecture series was not only a platform for academic exchange but also a valuable opportunity for the college to establish connections and deepen cooperation with top international scholars.
In the lecture session, Dr. Jonathan M Cullen first delivered a report entitled A systems approach for reducing emissions in energy and material systems, sharing his systematic research methods for emission reduction in energy and material systems. He conducted an in-depth analysis of the current challenges in the energy and material sectors, proposed innovative solutions, and showcased the latest achievements of his research team in carbon emission reduction. Dr. Jonathan's report was rich in content and offered unique insights, providing profound inspiration to the participating teachers and students.
Subsequently, Dr. Meng Fanran gave an engaging report titled Demystifying the Writing and Publication of High-Level Papers in the Low-Carbon Field. Combining his extensive research experience and practical guidance for students, he elaborated on the key elements and techniques for writing high-level papers in the low-carbon field. Dr. Meng's explanation was both profound and easy to understand and logically organized, which not only enhanced the participants' comprehensive understanding of paper writing but also inspired their passion for engaging in scientific research and pursuing excellence.
After the lectures, participating teachers and students expressed that they had benefited greatly and conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions with the two scholars on the report contents. The successful holding of this Overseas Experts and Scholars Lecture Series has not only broadened the academic horizons of teachers and students but also laid a solid foundation for the college's future scientific research cooperation and development.
